There have been some truly stupendous moments in the history of weed, which, incidentally, is essentially the history of humankind. This week is all about how recreational legalization has begun to shape the way an entire generation gets intoxicated.
In November of 2011, an extensive study found that in states that have legalized medicinal cannabis, there has been a steep drop in fatal car accidents. This non-negligible drop in drunk driving incidents has been largely attributed to folks opting to indulge in weed rather than booze on nights out. We wholeheartedly approve.
Even though California was one of the most loudly pro-cannabis states in the Nation, in July of 2012, Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously to shutter over 900 medicinal marijuana dispensaries. In an attempt to re-regulate dispensaries (which were often seen stacked, two or three on a single city block) 170 dispensaries would be allowed to continue operating after a lengthy review process. National news outlets would soon share disturbing images of DEA agents raiding dispensaries while devastated patients wept beside them. This incident left Americans with a narrow view of cannabis faced with the reality of marijuana as medicine.
Everything changed again in February of 2014 when new federal guidelines made it possible for banks to provide financing to legal marijuana sellers. This would lay the foundation for the “green rush” that enabled former black-market growers and sellers to not only come out of the shadows but to exponentially increase their bottom lines. The result being that many young adults in legalized states are choosing deliciously affordable weed over hangover inducing booze.
